How
did you start in your first job?
40 years
ago many students left school at 15 years and were able to pick up
a job. They were able to improve their skills and mature through a
workplace, unlike today where they are encouraged to stay at
school. For most this works fine but there is an increasing number
of young people who drop out of school early.
The
TradeStart program is a response to the increasing number of
young people who do not want to continue school to year 12 and the
indication from employers who want apprentices at 15 years of
age.
TradeStart is
looking for potential young people who are in Years 9 and 10 and
who are not reaching their full potential at school. They will need
to be good with their hands but will be matched with a tutor to
assist them with their academic studies and attend school part
time.
Former
TradeStart Trainer David Robinson said, “We all need a start in
life and starting in a trade at 15 or 16 is ideal for many, we all
need to think about who gave us the opportunity of our first job
and perhaps return the opportunity to someone young
today.”
To
commence TradeStart, funding was secured from AMP and Social
Ventures Australia to help develop young people’s skills on a
factory floor and be introduced to employers to start an
apprenticeship.
